THURSDAY, MARCH 30TH @ NOEW 2023
2:00PM - 5:00PM | GALLIER HALL
The late 20th century and the dawn of the genetic age heralded a revolution in medicine under the banner of biotechnology. Biotechnology or “biotech” has delivered medical miracles on a grand scale, from antibodies and cells used to fight cancer to the COVID-19 vaccines that brought the world out of the crisis stage of the pandemic. These medical marvels have also completely rewritten the rules of drug development economics, with many born out of Silicon Valley-style startups grounded in university technology rather than large legacy drug companies. This mini-summit explores the promise (and occasional perils) of biotechnology development, covering all stages of the development of new technologies. The process begins with the translational researchers, who discuss the unique challenges of product conceptualization and development from university research. From there small startups take over, fighting to secure resources and prove out technologies based in cutting edge science. All of this is funded by specialized venture capital investors, accustomed to the highly technical nature (and unique risks) associated with biotechnology and healthcare tech development at this early stage. By sharing their stories, these panels and speakers will give us insights and a roadmap for how to develop the New Orleans and Gulf South biotechnology ecosystem in a way that allow us to share the city’s audacious solutions with profound medical challenges with the world.
